Snow and black ice: the Eiffel Tower closed to the general public on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 February 2018
Taking into account the current weather conditions (heavy snow and freezing rain, temperatures below 0° C) and in order to ensure the safety of visitors, the Société d’Exploitation de la tour Eiffel (SETE) has decided that the monument will be closed to the general public all day on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 February to enable the tower to be completely cleared of snow and black ice.
The large amount of snow covering the Eiffel Tower combined with very low temperatures have led to black ice forming thus making it impossible to use the platforms and staircases at the present time.

The Eiffel Tower under the snow

February 2018, 7th, the Eiffel Tower wake up covered with snow.

Removing snow from the Eiffel Tower

The very nature of the tower makes the process of clearing the snow away relatively complex: it is impossible to envisage gritting the platforms as this is corrosive for metal. Sanding is not authorised either as it could damage the lift mechanisms.
Consequently, the technique used consists of clearing the deeper layers of snow with shovels. The anti-frost treatment consists of applying calcium chloride and heating the platforms.
